Located in Alexandria, Virginia, the Del Ray Passive House was designed as a forever family home rooted in three guiding principles: regeneration, quality, and collaboration. Over four years of design and construction, those principles shaped every aspect of the home, from the natural building materials selected to the way light moves through the interior spaces.


The result is a PHIUS-certified net-positive home that feels calm, grounded, and deeply alive.


Beyond Sustainable Architecture


At Cedar, regenerative residential architecture means moving beyond reducing harm. It means designing homes that actively support human and ecological well-being over time.


That philosophy shaped the Del Ray Passive House from the very beginning.


The home was designed in dialogue with its environment rather than in opposition to it. A welcoming front porch strengthens connection to the surrounding neighborhood, while the expansive backyard creates opportunities for gathering, restoration, and play. A green roof and rain garden help manage stormwater while supporting pollinators and local ecological balance.

A Home Designed Through Collaboration


The Del Ray Passive House also reflects Cedar’s belief that regenerative architecture requires collaboration across disciplines.


Architects, consultants, engineers, builders, and homeowners all contributed to shaping the final experience of the home. That spirit of collaboration can perhaps best be seen in one of the project’s most unexpected features: the “Rainbow Tornado” stair installation.

Late in the project, the homeowner requested an additional safety feature for the stairwell. Rather than approaching the request as a compromise, the design team treated it as an opportunity for creativity and play. We collaborated with Treenet Collective to create a colorful intervention that enhances both safety and experience.


What could have been purely functional became joyful.


That moment reflects the broader philosophy behind the entire project.


Regenerative architecture is not solely about efficiency. It is about creating homes that support fuller ways of living. Homes that restore. Homes that connect people to nature, to community, and to themselves.
